May ushers in the prom and graduation season each year. Proms and formals are a right of passage for many young people. They experience dressing formally and entering the “adult” world at a level they had not previously experienced. It’s a night of fancy dresses and difficulty dancing in uncomfortable shoes. If I remember correctly, most of the shoes were off after the first song! May also brings us to college graduations. This is also a right of passage for our young people. Suddenly, they will need to “Go out and get a REAL job” for the first time. This is frightening and exhilarating all at the same time. What do these two experiences have in common? Education. College grads have received knowledge that prepares them for a career. During their college years, they gain skills that will serve them as they start out on their own for the first time. They have learned well, studied hard and succeeded! Prom night is also about education. This education is of a different kind. Have we, as parents, taught our children well about right and wrong? Have we encouraged them to save themselves for marriage and to abstain from physical intimacy until that time? Will the lessons they learned and the ones they lived keep them holding unto the moral center that comes from a heart surrendered to Christ? Have we as the church done our part in preparing both our high school and college age young people to hold onto Jesus or have we let them down? We must remember that each of us is a living example of Jesus to the young people around us. We must remember that little eyes and little ears (as well as older ones) are always busy watching and listening. What will they hear and see? We must make sure that we are doing all we can to help mold and shape young minds to follow Christ as we live the example we expect them to live. Young people and kids need guides along the way. We as parents and adults are a primary role model for our kids, but sometimes they need others to help them make sense of “growing up” in our culture. Please join me in prayer as we ask God to guide and lead us in meeting the needs of the young people of the congregation. What does that mean? Well, that’s just it. I’m not sure. Perhaps it means an all volunteer team to work together to help our kids navigate the world we have brought them in to. Perhaps it means a student intern assisted by members of our congregation. There is a key piece to this need, finances. So many things are nipping at our heels that cry out for our attention. Building upgrades and regular repairs, a road sign, youth leadership, evangelism efforts, and community involvement are all desperately needed. As we enter into the budget development season, please be in prayer for each board and especially the Board of Stewards as they wrestle with and tackle these difficult questions. Pray for them as they seek God to find a responsible yet faith inspiring budget for the coming year. Psalm 50:10 reminds us that God owns the cattle on a thousand hills. Let us remember that all things come from God and if we seek first His kingdom all things we need will be given to us (Matt. 6:33). Let us all join together to seek God’s wisdom and guidance and watch the amazing things God will do in the coming year!!! Serving Beside You in Christ, Pastor Bob Other News...
