July/August 2011
“Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10-NASB95)
Our lives run at a reckless pace. I just came back from my daughter’s college orientation event in Virginia. I am amazed at how reckless, rude, and irresponsible the drivers are there. Now, I’ve driven in Manhattan, Center City Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. to name a few. So, when I say reckless – I know what I am talking about!
Reckless. Isn’t that how we live our lives these days? Fast and furious come to mind to describe the pace of American life. We stress our minds, our bodies, and our spirits. Christians are not immune from it. In some ways we are busier than our neighbors who don’t attend church. We add in meetings, potlucks, and special events on top of an already overloaded schedule. Now – don’t get me wrong, I deeply appreciate and applaud those who are involved and serve in our church. The church could not minister without your efforts. But, how are we different than our unchurched neighbors? When we don’t know our neighbors how are we going to be a living example for them to see?
The Bible tells me that I am to be salt and light. I am to be an example of a transformed life. I am to be living proof of how Jesus makes a difference in the human experience. Let’s take the time to slow down a little this summer. Let’s rest in Jesus. Let’s get to know our neighbors and live a transformed life for them to see. Have them over for a cookout. Invite them over to watch a ball game or to go fishing. Spend time with your kids. Invite a neighbor to VBS or to a worship service. Spend time with your spouse.
Most importantly, spend time with God. Let the living water that is the Son of God wash over and refresh you. Let the Word of God recharge your spiritual batteries. Take the time to listen to God and let Him renew, restore, refresh and recharge your spirit with His presence. Let’s listen to the words of the psalmist and let him renew you as you let God quiet your spirit.
See you in worship and have a wonderful summer!
Peace and grace to you.
